Heraldic banner returned

NZPA staff correspondent London

Years of tradition in the Most Noble Order of the Garter were laid aside yesterday when Dame Norma Holyoake was presented with her late husband’s heraldic banner. The banners are traditionally returned to the order when a knight dies and this was done in a special service in Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel yesterday. But after the service, Sir Keith’s banner was given to Dame Norma after a special request was made by the family. The gold-and-purple banner with oak and holly

portrayed on it will now return to New Zealand to be kept by the Holyoake family. It will also be paraded at a thanksgiving service for the life and work of Sir Keith, to be held at Westminster Abbey next week. Dame Norma was accompanied by her son, Mr Roger Holyoake, and the New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr W. L. Young, at the service, conducted by the Dean of Windsor, the Rt Rev. Michael Mann. The Queen made Sir Keith a Knight of the Garter in 1980. He was only the second New Zealander to be admitted to the order, which dates from 1348.
