Obituary

A well-known Christchurch senior cricketer of 30 and more years ago died recently. Jimmy Nee was regarded as the best all-round schoolboy cricketer of his time. A very stylish batsman and a swing bowler of brisk pace, Nee had a highly successful career at St Bede’s College and for the West Christchurch club after leaving school.

At college from 1933 to 1937, Jim Nee was in the first XI for three years, being captain for the last two. fn those two seasons he scored 451 runs at 56.4 and 574 at 52.2; his bowling brought 28 wickets at 14.3 then 43 at 8.9. He scored at least two centuries for the first eleven. He was also- in the first fifteen as a full-back or five-eighths for two years, and was a prefect in 1936 and 1937.

A very talented young cricketer, Nee first played in the senior grade in 193839. War-year records are not complete, but those available show that in the senior grade he scored at least 1600 runs and took more than 150 wickets.

For all his sporting success, Nee remained the same modest, unruffled young man so well-liked by his contemporaries. Immaculate in appearance as he was in technique, he never lost his affection for the game, and was among thejfoost regular of spectators at Lancaster Park.
