Tenth shuttle ready
NZPA-AP Cape Canaveral The countdown for America’s tenth space shuttle mission began yesterday. The crew predicted that the journey would pave the way for servicing of satellites and building the permanent orbiting station President Ronald Reagan
wants. Among the novelties planned for the five-day flight aboard the shuttle Challenger are the first spacewalks without lifelines. Two of the fiVe astronauts will move away from the shuttle with a back-pack propelled by nitrogen gas jets.
Lift-off from Cape Canaveral is scheduled for 1 a.m. tomorrow (N.Z. time). The commander, Mr Vance Brand, the pilot, Robert Gibson, and the mission specialists, Bruce McCandless, Robert Stewart, and Ronald McNair, arrived on Wednesday from their Houston training base.
