Posthumous honour

A former Lincoln College professor, the late Professor G. R. Williams, has become the first New Zealander to be put on a special international roll of honour for his conservation work.

His name was one of only nine put on the World Wildlife Fund International Conservation Roll of Honour last year. The roll is a posthumous honour for persons having rendered outstanding services to conservation. Professor Williams was professor of entomology at Lincoln College until his death last year.

The honour is in recognition of his work as director of the New Zealand Wildlife Service, as an active participant in national and international conservation organisations, and as author or editor of books and scientific papers on natural history and conservation. The announcement was made by the Director-General of the World Wildlife Fund, Mr Charles de Haes, from the World Conservation Centre at Gland in Switzerland.

Only 68 names have been put on the roll of honour since it began in 1973.
