Embassy in Jeddah
PA Wellington The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Cooper, has announced the establishment of a New Zealand embassy in the Saudi Arabian commercial capital of Jeddah. The embassy will at first be under a Charge d’Affaires with accreditation from the Ambassador to Rome, Mr Cooper said yesterday. When the diplomatic corps transferred to the Saudi Arabian royal capital of Riyadh, probably next year, New Zealand would appoint a resident Ambassador, he said. In nearby Bahrain, the existing consulate-general which has recently been upgraded will also become an embassy with a resident Ambassador.
The new Jeddah office is expected to start business within two months and will be officially opened by the Minister.
