Black ban lifted

Canterbury trade unions yesterday lifted their black ban on companies in the Fletcher Challenge Group in Canterbury. The ban had been imposed at the request of the Engineers’ Union and the Plumbers’ Union because a Fletcher company, Mecon, had given , redundancy notices to three workers on

the Canterbury Savings Bank building site in Christchurch. The unions had wanted the notices withdrawn while discussions were held about the need for redundancies.

A spokesman for Mecon said that the company had agreed to withdraw the notices pending talks on February 8.
