Auckland now certain of outright win

PA Auckland Auckland captured 18 Northern Districts wickets in their Shell Trophy cricket match at Eden Park yesterday and is virtually certain of outright victory and a share of the competition lead.

Only an unbroken ninthwicket partnership between Andy Roberts and Cliff Dickeson stopped the game from ending within two days. Following on after trailing Auckland by 158 runs on the first innings, Roberts and Dickeson made certain Auckland would need to bat again when they took the score to 170 for eight at stumps. Northern, which played soundly on the first day in scoring 62 without loss in 77 minutes, went downhill fast in the first session yesterday. John Bracewell needed only 22 minutes to snare his first wicket when he had Mike Wright caught behind. Wright’s partner, Lindsay Crocker, was taken at the wicket six runs later.

Roger Broughton was stumped 10 runs on and, without addition, John Parker gave the Auckland wicket-keeper, Paul Kelly, his fourth victim when a ball from Martin Snedden seamed from the pitch and took the outside edge. A brief fightback by the patient David White and Roberts slowed Auckland’s charge, but once Roberts went the castle crumbled, Northern failing by nine runs to avert the follow-on.

A token wag of the Northern tail did little to help the

cause until Roberts and Dickeson did their bit in surviving for 46 minutes but scoring only 10 runs. AUCKLAND First innings 311/8 dec. NORTHERN DISTRICTS First innings M.
