Wellington still leads
PA Palmerston North
Wellington held on to its Shell Trophy points lead when it managed to hold off an attack from the second placed Central Districts in Palmerston North yesterda.y- .. .. . .
Wellington needlessly lost wickets in a run-chase that was never really a possibility before an injured Evan Gray and Ross Ormiston combined for a successful late partnership. Gray did not last the innings, however, and was run out for six with just three overs remaining. Grant Cederwell then joined Ormiston at the crease but also failed to last. Central needed a wicket from each of the final three balls when Cederwell drove at a delivery from Gary Robertson and was magnificently caught at gully by Ron Hart.
Brian Cederwell, how-
ever, came and edged a ball just short of Scott Briasco at third slip, and Wellington was safe. Earlier Central declared at 239 for four wickets after it lost its captain, John Wiltshire. Wiltshire suffered a broken arm off a short ball hit by Grant Cederwell. Central picked up four points for its first innings win and move on to 36 points — just four points behind the Trophy leader. Wellington.
