“The Press” 100 km Fun-ride #2 The mechanical condition of any cycle to be ridden in the Fun Ride should be checked before the event. Many cycles are ridden only to and from work or school, and do not get the attention from their owners that they require. The machines perform adequately on these small trips; but they have the habit of breaking down on rides of over 10km. A few essential checks and adjustments are listed below: © BRAKES: Check that there is sufficient contact area to stop quickly, and examine for straining cables. If in doubt, it is better to replace the wire cables. ® TYRES: Check that they have sufficient tread, and that the rubber is not perished. Also look for any large cuts that could cause problems. ® CHAIN: Oil the chain, as this can considerably lessen the energy required to move. ® BEARINGS: Make sure that all bearings have sufficient grease, and that cones are not loose. ® NUTS and BOLTS: Ensure that all clamps, nuts, screws, and bolts are fastened tightly. Such checks may seem bothersome, but all these parts are essential to the mechanical well-being of your cycle. Its good mechanical condition is vital for comfortable and efficient cycling. In addition, mechanical faults are a major reason for cycle accidents. As well as checking the mechanics of your cycle, be sure that it is set up correctly to suit you. Some of the following measurements may be of some assistance in fitting the bike to you: SADDLE HEIGHT: Sit on the cycle in the riding position, and with one pedal close to the ground, put your heel on the pedal, without tilting the hip. If your leg is straight, the saddle height is correct to within a few millimetres. The saddle should be relatively level. HANDLEBAR HEIGHT: the bars should be set slightly below the saddle height, and the tilt of the bars should be comfortable while riding for a reasonable period. The distance between the handlebars and the saddle should be the same as the length of your lower arm. Place your elbow against the nose of the saddle, and extend you arm toward the handlebars. The centre of the handlebars should be at your fingertips. Now that the basic settings have been made, you can start to develop a technique of riding efficiently. I shall cover riding techniques in the next article. By Grant O’Brien, President, Canterbury Cyclists’ Association
