Permission to carry whip
PA Auckland The connections of the Clevedon trotter, Cal Brydon, have been given official approval for his driver to carry a whip in this evening’s Air Pacific Mobile Trot at Alexandra Park. Cal Brydon had been the centre of an inquiry when he was narrowly beaten by Sir Castleton in the Rhodes Memorial Flying Mile at Alexandra park on December 10.
His driver, Gordon Newberry, asserted that the
horse did his best without being struck with the whip. Stipendiary stewards then informed Newberry he would not be allowed to carry a whip in future driving engagements behind Cal Brydon. Since then, though, the horse has been driven by John Newberry. Cal Brydon recently contested an official trial at Pukekohe, with John Newberry carrying a whip. Stipendiary stewards afterwards decided to waive their earlier ruling.
