Tomkinson pair ready for success

By J. J. BOYLE There would be no long odds on offer about the chances of Upper Cut and Hint winning two of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s feature races next week for the Jim Tomkinson stable.

Upper Cut will be the first to be put to the test — in the Steinlager Handicap on Monday.

Hint, the South Island’s top three-year-old filly, will tilt at Breeders’ Stakes honours two davs later.

The stablemates gave reassuring evidence of their present fitness in their training at Riccarton yesterday.

Upper Cut beat Bev’s Girl by a length and a half over 1800 m on the outside of the course proper and ran the distance in the smart time of lmin 535, and the final 800 m in 535.

Hint was unaccompanied in her trial on the outside of the course proper, and there was much to like about her effort to finish 1800 m in 2min 2.85, the last 800 m in 52.45, and the final 600 m in 39.85. Hint will be on trial for the first time beyond 1600 m in the Breeders’ Stakes, but her fourth in the New Zealand One Thousand Guineas was achieved with a plucky performance, and with a weight advantage she could be a formidable adversary for her elders at 1800 m next Wednesday. Anticipate, an acceptor for the Steinlager Handicap on Monday, sprinted sharply in company with Sound Note on the outside of the course proper. They ran through the last 800 m in 50s, the final 600 m in 38.85.

Anticpate’s stablemates, Noble Note and Chiasso,

started easily near the 800 m. and quickened for the last 600 m in 38s.

Dios, an acceptor for the Noahs Handicap on Monday, recorded 51.4 s for 800 in. Rattle the Sabre and Silver Gale returned 525. The Kid and Ariage finished their 800 m on terms in 525. Talgo and Mhorso followed in 52.45. the final 600 m in 37.65.

Talgo is top weight in the Bollinger Champagne Handicap. and will give Tane Matthews his last chance to improve his good record on South Island courses before he moves north to ride for the Te Awamutu stable of Bill Sanders. Amy Annie started behind Grey Sapphire. Forever Amber, and Bridoon at the 1200 m, but ran up strongly in the straight to finish with a short lead in lmin 17.65.

Dreamville and Aqua Flight were paired for 1400 m on the plough, and went about their work with a will. They finished in lmin 30.65, the last 600 m in 395.

Valigma and Amarena followed in lmin 32.45, the final 600 m in 39.85, and Sharemarket and Nearco Park returned lmin 30.25, the final 600 m in 40.25. Salutation was one of the fastest over 1200 m on the plough. She recorded lmin 21.85, the last 600 m in 38.55. Double Bank also did well in returning lmin 19.95.

Beach Bird was slow to mount speed from the 1200 m, but quickened for the final 600 m in 38.65.

Fairway Lass followed the same pattern, working up to 37.8 s for her final 600 m.

Dainty Dish was working keenly alongside Spy Force finishing 600 m in 40.65. Dainty Dish is being pre-

pared for the Breeders Stakes next Wednesday.

Zaneglenn reeled off 600 m in 36.65, a smart solo run.
