WANGANUI

Special correspondent Wellington

Topweight Beau Charade is the form runner and consequently looks the hardest to beat in the Walker Handicap, the first leg of the Wanganui double tomorrow.

The first leg is hardly strong on form and the handicap has Beau Charade on 56kg, while six of the 13 runners are on the minimum of 52kg.

Beau Charade had one run at Trentham for a distant third, behind the Beaver Boy’s Summer Handicap. Before that he was fourth at Woodville. In his previous outing Beau Charade had been successful at Awapuni on Boxing Day.

One of the hardest for Beau Charade to beat may be Ballantrae. The six-year-old was going well enough mid-field during the running of the Terrace Regency last Saturday, but was badly checked and finished last. His form has not been that convincing, but he could do better in this one.

Pro Royale found the Anniversary a bit rich on the first day at Wellington, but almost won at Woodville the time before and has to be accorded respect here, in spite of his inexperience over ground. Miss Bomore is the form runner in the second leg of the double, the Bristol “4000.” She was sixth, without much luck in the fillies and mares race at Awapuni and had a couple of seconds before, one a narrow one behind Atrapar at Awapuni.

Northern visitor Giovanni has a good record on the track and was fourth at his most recent outing at Awapuni on Anniversary Day. McWhinney, Lens and El Pedro are useful while Shady News shows promise. A threat though could come from Vera’s Pal, a speedy mare, which will be having her first run since April.
