Another bid for Linwood library

Another attempt to put money in the Christchurch City Council budget for a Linwood branch library, the fifth in the city, may be made this year. According to present estimates, the library could cost $288,000, spread over four years. A building could be completed in 1987 if a site were selected and $72,000 were put in the cultural budget over the next four years. Other branch libraries are in Spreydon, New Brighton, Papanui, and Shirley. The Linwood library would complete a network of professional staffed libraries.

“The people should know the council is still trying to push it,” Cr C. G. Cotton said of the library project. He told the culture and public relations committee that a site in Linwood Park might be suitable if another location could not be found for the library. “It would go beautifully in a park,” he said.

Cr Geoff Stone said that commercially zoned land available in Linwood should be considered first.

“We have a site firmly in mind,” said the City Librarian, Mr J. E. D. Stringleman, “but it is only good if the shopping centre development goes ahead.” Cr Stone said that G.U.S. Properties should be asked again about its plans for the proposed Linwood indoor mall, and should be asked if it intends to apply for another extension of time during which the company can obtain a building permit. “If it all falls into place, you need the money in the budget,” the committee chairman, Cr R. H. Arbuckle, said of the site search.
