Tact Byrd continues good form
PA Whangarei Tact Byrd continued his good run of form with a meritorious victory in the Whangarei Wines and Spirits Stakes, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Northland Trotting Club's Ruakaka meeting yesterday. Patiently driven by the top reinsman, Peter Wolfenden, Tact Byrd was toward the rear early and still only about eighth with 600 m to run.
He improved smartly across the top and challenged strongly down the straight to hit the front about 50m from the post.
He headed off Estrada
with That's Luck close up third. That’s Luck had led with a round to go, with Estrada mid-field. These two led into the home straight but could not withstand Tact Byrd's determined finish.
Another favourite. Light Opera, took out the second leg, the Newmans Coachlines Handicap Pace. Light Opera trailed the pacemaking Beau Rain on settling and though looking in a tight spot on the fence, managed to poke through down the straight to win by three-quarters of a length from Kamwood Hanover, which headed Beau Rain.
