Shipping group spends $2.5M

A total investment of $2.5 million will be made by the Union Shipping Group, Ltd, this year in computer equipment for the company's new Auckland head office, as well as computer terminals and screens for a network • spanning all its operations in Australia and New Zealand. A feature of the group's newly-equipped computer network is the freight data base. This will maintain records of all cargo, equipment and ship movements. It will also provide instantly available information for shippers on the location of cargo units, equipment availability and freight documentation, as well as

offering Union Shipping the opportunity to further improve the efficiency of its shipping services. The decision to purchase an IBM 4381-2 computer coincides with a decision by the group to move its dataprocessing department from Wellington to its new head office in Union House, Auckland. Launched by IBM four months ago, the 4381 is being purchased by Union Shipping for SI.3M. The company is spending an additional SI.2M on associated equipment and screens. The computer, with 16 megabytes of main memory, will run the MVS/SP operating system.
