Cricket charges

Sir,—l support the New Zealand Cricket Council’s stand in charging parents $lO to bring their children into the stand enclosures for the one-day cricket international between England and New Zealand on February 18. The message is quite simple — don’t bring them into the stand at all, take them on to the embankment, in the special area provided, for just $1.50. I went into the stand area last year because the embankment area looked a bit on the crowded side. I spent the afternoon surrounded by hordes of young boys and girls, all covered in spilt ice-cram and soft drink, smashing cans together every ten seconds, and shrieking “Hadlee, Hadlee” incessantly. The fact that the god-like “R-J” wasn’t playing appeared to make no difference whatsoever. This year I look forward to relative peace and quiet — “Famous last words?” — Yours, etc., ARTHUR STEELE.
