Police threatened

PA Invercargill Te Anau policemen were confronted by six men carrying offensive weapons at their station on Saturday evening. Constable Tim Henderson said the police were called to the Manapouri Motor Inn at 8 p.m. and arrested one man on charges of alleged assault. Friends of the arrested man followed the car to Te Anau and confronted four policemen at the station. Offensive weapons such as baseball bats were used to threaten the police, Constable Henderson said. Police reinforcements were called from Invercargill and seven Wellington policemen, in the province to assist with flood relief, drove to Te Anau.

Constable Henderson said members of the Te Anau Volunteer Fire Brigade assisted the four policemen during the incident, which ended at 9 p.m. with the arrest of the six alleged offenders.

The seven arrested men were taken to Invercargill on Saturday night and will appear in the District Court at Invercargill today on charges of assault, unlawful assembly, carrying offensive weapons, and resisting arrest.
