Upset win to Cox in board event

A surprise win by Peter Cox (Waikuku) in the final of the senior malibu board race was the highlight of the Lion Brown-Radio Avon Canterbury surf life-saving championships at Waikuku Beach at the weekend. Cox has thrust himself into prominence this season with a number of bold performances in board events, but he was not considered a title-winner against such experienced competitors as Geoff Walker (Waimairi), a group from Taylors Mistake, and a couple of Victorians. However, Cox kept touch with the leaders and when the pressure came on as the riders reached the breakers. Cox remained calm, got a good wave, and edged ahead of Michael Maher (Victoria) and Walker in the final few metres. Teresa Stanley (Taylors Mistake), the defending titleholder and the first Canterbury swimmer to finish in the surf teams’ race on Saturday, did not swim in the individual surf race yesterday. Victorians filled the first two places and the first Canterbury swimmer home was Anthea Forbes (Waimairi). Lachie Marshall (New Brighton) and David Russell (Victoria) featured in one of the best finishes of the day in the senior surf race. Both emerged from the surf together but Russell showed a better wading technique and drew ahead by about half a metre in the dash to the finish. The host club featured strongly in the senior belt final. Mike Scott (Victoria) won the race to the buoys, but he was followed closely by Phil Seal and his Waikuku team-mate, Gary Connor in third place. Taylors Mistake A teams won both the four and six-man rescue and resuscitation events. Waimairi B won the women’s four place final, and South Brighton A the six place final. All these teams earned automatic entry to the national championships in Napier in March. North Beach had outstanding success in the craft events at the championships. Crews from the club won the senior and junior surf-boat titles, the senior and junior surf-canoe titles, and the senior and junior surf-boat rescue titles. Its reputation was tarnished when it finished third in the senior canoe rescue and was disqualified after winning a re-run of the junior canoe rescue. After the first final one of the crew members had to leave the beach and the crew failed to notify officials that it had made an alteration to its crew. It was a costly oversight. Abbreviations used in the results are: New Brighton (N. 8. North Beach (Nth B.), South Brighton (5.8.), Spencer Park (S.P.), Taylors Mistake (T.M.), Victoria (V.), Waimairi (W.), Waikuku (Wk.).
