Hunt win topples Shirley
Barrington established itself as the favourite to win the second round series of the B.N.Z. women’s senior tennis competition by beating its rival, Shirley, at Wilding Park yesterday. Shirley finished on top in the first round, but slipped to defeat yesterday after Robyn Hunt (Barrington) beat Sally Moorfield in the top singles match. Looking fit and confident, Mrs Hunt varied her game well and scored some sparkling winners with sharply angled volleys. It was her second win against Mrs Moorfield this month. Shirley was splendidly placed after winning both doubles, but Delia O’Malley struck an important blow for Barrington by giving Leigh Johnson her first defeat this season, and Debbie Hills and Mrs Hunt chimed in with further singles wins to give their side a one-set victory. Barrington now has 23 points, followed by Elmwood and Shirley, each with 19, Fendalton 9, Avonside 8,
and United 3. Matches were played on both Saturday and yesterday, and the second series will end with another double header next week-end. Features of the second and third rounds were Avonside’s first win, at the expense of Fendalton, and the good form shown by Phillippa Lewthwaite (United). Although her team went down twice, Miss Lewthwaite improved her prospects of a high ranking by beating two members of the Canterbury squad, Rachel Wilson (Elmwood) and Julianne Taylor (Shirley).
