Emus dogged at crease

A 233-minute innings of 59 by Andrew McGuirk helped the Northern New South Wales Emu Colts cricket side to a reasonably solid position against the Canterbury Kiwi Colts on the first day of their three-day match at Hagley Oval yesterday. McGuirk, who was dropped at wide mid-on early in his innings, later showed true application. He and Graeme Worley put on 81 for the third wicket, a partnership broken finally by the advent of Canterbury’s sixth bowler (of seven used), the mediumpaced Danny Halligan. There was another sound partnership later, 52 between Tony Fort and John Frame. Fort, an opener, had returned to bat after earlier retiring hurt when he ducked into a bouncer from Roger Ford. The Australians were clearly more intent on occupying the crease than on scoring runs. Not until the fifth hour of play did the run-rate reach two per over. lain Boyle, with his sharp turn, an occasional Chinaman, and variable length, looked more an attacking left-arm spinner than a containing one, but the Emus took only 52 runs from his 47 overs, allowing him 24 maidens. Scores:—Emu Colts 190/7 (Fort 30, McQuirk 59, Worley 32, Frame 24, Ford 2/40, Boyle 3/52).
