Coney scores winning runs

PA Auckland Three powerful blows in the last over from Jeremy Coney took Wellington to victory in the Shell Cup oneday cricket match at the Eden Park No. 2 ground yesterday. Facing Auckland’s modest total of 137, Wellington went smoothly along with a 91run stand by Bruce Edgar and Robert Vance. With plenty of wickets in hand Wellington seemed sure to win easily. However, the pace of the scoring dropped, Edgar was out at 91, Justin Boyle at 103 and Vance at 120. Wellington found itself needing 16 runs from the last four overs. Gary Troup conceded two singles, but bowled Evan Gray. Coney and Ross Ormiston took six from the next over by Warren Stott, then followed a prolonged discussion whether Troup would be able to bowl his tenth over. As Wellington was allowed to face only 46 overs after the half-hour delay at the start, the appropriate rule was not clear, for the number did not allow the calculation of no bowler being able to bowl more than a fifth of the overs available. Troup did bowl the over, five balls from which Ormiston could not score, and bowled him with the sixth. Martin Snedden had the last over, and eight runs

were needed to win. Coney pulled the first ball for four, drove the next for two, and then pulled the third ball for another boundary, and Wellington had got home with three balls to spare.
