Phone problems

Telephone exchanges in most parts of Southland are still working, but chances of outside contact to private homes are slim. The Post Office’s senior divisional engineer of works and services in Christchurch, Mr W. B. ten Kley, said last evening that until the floodwaters had receded, it was difficult to assess how much damage had been done to the communication systems. “The telephone exchanges are still working but if people were trying to get someone whose house was

under water, I can assure you they will not get through. Telephones just don’t work under water,” he said. At this stage it was still uncertain whether Christchurch would be called on to help repair damaged lines but the Post Office was expecting word from Invercargill’s regional engineer today. “Until we get more information from him on the damage, we can only wait. It really depends entirely on how fast the water goes,” said Mr ten Kley.
