Tact Byrd form runner at Northland today

Special correspondent Auckland Such is his recent racing, Tact Byrd should hold the key to the Northland Trotting Club’s T.A.B. double at Ruakaka today when he contests the first leg, the Whangarei Four-Year-Old Mobile Pace. Tact Bvrd beat all but Casino Lad home at Cambridge last Friday evening and in his last seven starts has fashioned quite a record with a win and four seconds. His victory came, albeit narrowly, at Claudelands the start before last on January 20. It was a fine performance after being shuffled back from his early trail position on the fence to near last at the 500 m with all the lead changes. He would have to only get something of a decent run from his second-line draw today — and his driver, Peter Wolfenden, should ensure that — to be able to hold off the expected challenges from Estrada, Waradina, Marauder, and That’s Luck.

With the scratching of the last-start winner, Hurricane Paul, the second leg, the Newmans Handicap, is now wide open, any number of candidates have fine prospects. Light Opera seems the most likely to prevail. However Lady Able, Kamwood Hanover, and Tuatahi Dream appear likely to test him.
