Andaman Auckland prospect

Special correspondent Auckland Everything points to Andaman winning the first leg of the double at the Auckland Racing Club’s Asian Conference meeting at Ellerslie today. It will be right against the form, certainly, if he does not go very close. Andaman was not far from winning the Flag Inns Trophy at Ellerslie on January 3, in his last race—third at the post then promoted to second. He finished strongly down on the inside but just a fraction late. The time before, Andaman won a class two 1600 m at Avondale in December, again running on well as he does usually. The generous way in which he runs out his races helps make Andaman a particularly appealing prospect for today’s Wattie Industries handicap, the meeting being held on the new course where stamina seems to be so much a requirement. Andaman might have trouble making much early use of his No. 1 barrier position, but he will very likely finish the 1575 m better than most of his opponents. The best of them could well be Azaking and, even though he will probably be at fair odds, Ben Kazam. Azaking was another which showed up during the Auckland Cup meeting with his win in the 1600 m Marque Vue Handicap and second placing, behind Passakiss, in the Clifford Plate. Ben Kazam, in his second race after a spell, managed a close third over this course on November 30. He has had just one race meanwhile, when beaten, after running prominently to the home turn, in the Flag Inns Trophy. Andaman’s sire, Danseur Etoile, has a strong representative too, in the second leg, the Pukekohe Colt, Eridick. Eridick has been racing consistently well and he runs on gamely. Quibble and Susi Bear are others with speed above the average, and they, too have been racing well. With many of the field so sadly lacking form it is hard to say where the luck went in the draw of mounts in the first race for invited riders, the Steinlager Challenge. In the second, the New Zealand Racing Conference Plate, New Zealand’s Jimmy Cassidy looks to have gained a good chance with Dave’s Tern. An Indonesian, W. Mewangkong, with Xmas Eve, and T. O. Lau, from Hong Kong, with Bridgeman, also drew two of the horses in form.
