Exciting end to matches
Good declarations made for exciting finishes in both senior women’s cricket matches at Porritt Park on Saturday. Low scoring on the first day was probably caused by the rough wickets, which have not yet had enough preparation. The individual highlight of the second day was the innings of 113 by Nicky Turner for Sydenham. Lancaster Park dropped several easy chances, but Turner still played many fine shots. Park had a lead of 35 on the first innings in spite of Sue Brown’s outstanding bowling with four for 46 off 40 overs. Sydenham, batting again, compiled a good total of 198 for six with Turner well sup-
ported by Nancy Williams, who made 31. Park’s best bowler was Paula Woolhouse who took three for 29. Park required 165 runs to win, but failed by 25 runs with three wickets in hand. Debbie Hockley top-scored with 54 and both Brown and Williams took three wickets. The Riccarton-St Albans game was evenly poised at the end of the first innings with only 10 runs separating the two sides. Riccarton declared its second innings closed at 138 for eight, Lesley Murdoch batting well for 68 not out. Brigit Legg extracted life from the track and finished with the outstanding figures of six for 29.
Set 129 to make in 80min St Albans came within 25 runs of outright victory and had six of its second innings wickets in hand. Scores:— Lancaster Park 145/7 (S. Brown 4/46) and 140/7 (D. Hockley 54, D. Ford 24; S. Brown 3/22, N. Williams 3/26) beat Sydenham 111/6 and 198/6 (N. Turner 113, Williams 31; P. Woolhouse 3/29) on the first innings. St Albans 136 (C. Campbell 59; D. Costello 3/49, S. Rattray 5/44) and 114/4 (K. Hadlee 47, Campbell 27; Costello 2/42) beat Riccarton 126 and 138/8 (S. Harris 27, C. Fleming 21, L. Murdoch 65 n. 0., B. Legg 6/29) on the first innings.
