Bid to import live sheep
PA Wellington The Acting Director-Gen-eral of Agriculture and Fisheries, Mr Mike Gould, says the Ministry is preparing proposals for a programme to import live sheep from Scandinavia to improve the gene pool. However, detailed proposals would still have to be approved by the Minister ol Agriculture, Mr Maclntyre, before any sheep could be imported. Mr Gould said that an inter-departmental committee, the maximum security quarantine advisory com-
mittee, had recently agreed that import of new sheep breeds could help boost productivity, efficiency and economic returns from New Zealand’s sheep flock.
