Young swimmers provide sparkle at championships

It was left to the younger swimmers to provide the races’ interest and records at the Canterbury swimming championships, which continues at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday and Sunday. Nine records were broken in the three sessions at the weekend and all were set in the youngest age group, the 12years and under section.

The senior age groups at the championships have provided little of note, the best efforts being the 100 m freestyle time of Andrew O'Donoghue (Wharenui) in the open grade, and Lisa Chamberlain (NewBrighton) and Tracey Black (New Brighton) in the women’s open events. O’Donoghue’s time of 55.82 s to win the 100 m freestyle was reasonable, but a better time could have been expected. He also won the 200 m freestyle, but his time was a mediocre 2min 2.535.

One of the least encouraging features of the championships to date has been the large drop-offs in times between 100 m to 200 m events, indicating a lack of condition or effort.

Grant Forbes (Wharenui) won the 100 m butterfly and 200 m individual medley, both in times slower than expected from him. His medley time was bettered by Anthony Beks (New Brighton), who won the 16-years title, and Richard Osborne (Wharenui) who won the 15-years event. Kara Taumaunu (Wharenui), a former Canterbury backstroke champion, won the 100 m backstroke in Imin 7.165. That was seven seconds outside his best time, but a commendable one considering

his lack of training. He scratched from the 200 m backstroke yesterday morning. Miss Chamberlain has dominated the women's open events. She won four of the six titles decided at the week-end. Regarded as a freestyler, she showed increasing versatility by winning titles in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly.

Her 100 m freestyle time of Imin 1.94 s was one of the more impressive times in the open grade and her winning effort of Imin 9.70 s in the 100 m butterfly was also a creditable effort.

The best 100 m butterfly time was returned by Tracey Black to win the girls 14-years title in Imin 8.395. She won three titles in the 14-years section, also the 100 m open backstroke in Imin 9.615, another good time.

Vicki Gleeson (Nelson South) made a worth-while journey to Christchurch. She won three titles, and her 100 m freestyle time of Imin 4.8 s in the girls 13-years age group was one of the better times recorded. Linda Robinson (Wharenui) had similar success in the girls 12-years and under age group, winning three titles, and in the girls 15-years section Kirsten Mclntosh (Wharenui) won five of the six titles decided. Michael Ford (Wharenui) continued his improved form by winning four titles in the boys 14-years section. His best time was in the 100 m freestyle at 59.735.

Tony Mason (Westport) gave the West Coast town its first Canterbury titles for many years when he won both the 14-years 100 m and 200 m breaststroke.

Craig Watson (Wharenui)

with three titles, and Craig Harris (Wharenui) with two. were the dominant swimmers in the boys 12-years and under section.

Harris also broke one of the oldest Canterbury records in the 100 m butterfly. His time of Imin 11.74 s took 1.9 s off the old 12-years record set by Eddie Box in 1972. Watson set new marks for the 12-years 200 m backstroke and 100 m breaststroke and both times must have given him satisfaction. The backstroke record, which he broke by an amazing 6.1 s with a new time of 2min 35.65, was set by Kara Taumaunu in 1978. Watson's winning time in the breaststroke of 2min 58.17 s took 3.0 s off the old time set by Grant Forbes in 1977. Four of the records were set by Dallas Hibbs (New Brighton), a 10-year-old swimming in the 12 and under section. In the 200 m freestyle he set a 10years record of 2min 23.165, an improvement of 5.5 s on Paul Rowe’s record set in 1973.

Hibbs took a large chunk off the 10-years 200 m backstroke record set by Shane Ellison in 1982. His time, 2min 48.915, lowered the old mark by 7.25. He was robbed of a further improvement of that time when he was disqualified in the final.

In the 100 m butterfly Hibbs broke his own 10 and 11-years records. He recorded Imin 13.785, an improvement of 1.65. Matthew Davenport (New Brighton) broke Grant Forbes’s 11-years 200 m breaststroke record, set in 1976, by 0.6 s with a new mark of 3min 9.875.

Kate Stokes (New Brighton) set a new time of 2min 57.54 s for the girls 10-years 200 m

backstroke. She took 0.9 s off the old time set in 1974 byDenise Head. Abbreviations used in the results are: Avon (A.). Allenton.
