Te Puni now in Chch
The New Zealand high jump champion and recordholder, Roger Te Puni, of Wellington, has moved to Christchurch for the next two months in an attempt to qualify for the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Canterbury has the greatest depth of high jumping ability in New Zealand and Te Puni hopes that this will help him go even higher.
Competing in the Fresh-up meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday, Te Puni narrowly failed in an attempt at 2.18 m, a centimetre above the New Zealand record. He won the contest with a 2.15 m leap. Bill Boyd (Papanui Redwood) and Keith Olds (Old Boys) cleared 2.05 m, but Boyd took the runner-up spot on a countback.
