Steven wins N.Z. 14s title
PA Auckland Brett Steven, of Auckland, clinched his second successive BP national 14s tennis championship when he beat Paul Grubi in the final at Auckland on Saturday. The 14-year-old won the 57minute match 6-2, 6-2, and confirmed expert opinion which has him as the next professional prospect in New Zealand tennis.
It was the third consecutive national title for the teenager. Two years ago, Brett won the nationals 12s singles final be-
fore winning his first 14s title a year ago.
On Saturday he showed himself to be a superior player, particularly when receiving a serve, to Grubi, who is also an excellent prospect. Steven entered the tournament as top seed and lost only 18 games and no sets on his way to the final.
He now moves to the nationals 16s tournament in Christchurch this week where, as eighth seed, he stands an excellent chance of advancing past the quarter-finals.
Waikato’s Suzzette Sonderegger defeated Danielle Tatana (Auckland) 6-2, 7-5 to win the 14s girls championship singles final. As with the boys’ finalists, both girls have also been in New Zealand coach Kevin Woolcott’s development squad. Lvnette Johnstone, of Auckland, beat Amanda Train (Canterbury) 6-1, 6-4, to clinch the 12-year-old girls’ final. Another Aucklander, Shane Ryder, won the 12-year-old boys’ singles from Wellington’s Dougal Crisp, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
