33-bed hospital available
The Nurse Maude District Nursing Association wants to rent out the Averill House Hospital for Men when the 33 patients are moved into a new wing due to be built at its Memorial Hospital. Proposals for the use of the wooden Merivale building have been invited from interested parties.
The association’s supervising nurse, Miss Diane Barnes, said plans to add a second floor to the Memorial Hospital were “plodding along.” Architects were still preparing final plans to go to the Health Department for approval.
Adding the extra floor was estimated to cost $700,000. It would contain 35
beds, the allowable limit with an unused Government subsidy for two Memorial beds and the 33 transferred from Averill House.
In the meantime, Miss Barnes said, the association wanted to find some use for the building that would cover its maintenance costs and rates. A rest home was one possibility.
