Boozy breath cuts motor

NZPA-AP Peking A Chinese Army technician has invented an electronic device that switches off a car’s motor when it detects alcohol on the breath of a driver.

The official English-lan-guage “China Daily” reported yesterday that Ren Zhicheng, who works at pn oil depot in Wuhan, was inspired to create the device when his wife offered him a drink on his birthday.

“The strong smell of liquor suddenly gave him an idea. He hurried to his workshop with the glass of

liquor in his hand and started to experiment on the new alcohol-sensing device,” the newspaper said. The report did not give’ details about the alcohol-, detector’s construction or operation, but it said three factories were already producing the device and orders had been received from Japan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines.

The newspaper described Ren as an electronics whiz who had 23 inventions to his credit, including 16 that are now being used commercially.
