General forecast A cold front should move north-east over central New Zealand bringing some rain to western areas but fine weather east of the ranges. Behind the front a westerly flow will give showers on the West Coast. District forecasts: Canterbury: Cloudy at first with some rain about the Alps; becoming fine during the morning; fresh warm north-westerlies inland and moderate mild north-easterlies on the coast. Marlborough: Strong northerlies about the Sounds and freshening northwesterlies elsewhere; cloudy, with scattered rain about the Sounds and western high country; becoming warmer. Nelson: Cloudy with occasional rain, especially in the west; north-westerlies

becoming fresh and gusty; mild.

Buller: Rain at first, with moderate north-wester-lies; a change to cooler south-westerlies later; rain easing to showers.

Westland: Rain easing to occasional showers by afternoon with moderate westerlies developing.

Tomorrow: Showers in Buller and Westland; a brief south-west change and a few showers in Canterbury; elsewhere fine.

Extended range forecast for the South Island for Thursday to Saturday: Showery on Thursday, but clearing; cool south-west-erlies turning to colder southerlies in the east on Friday, but winds decreasing and temperatures rising a little on Saturday.
