Shields set for strait
PA Invercargill The marathon swimmer, Belinda Shields, will try to become the second woman to swim Foveaux Strait later this month. Her coach and father, Darrell Shields, said yesterday that she would arrive in Invercargill on Tuesday week and will attempt the crossing some time between January 20 and 25, depending on conditions. Shields, aged 22, has previously swum Cook Strait and the English Channel.
Meda McKenzie is the only woman to have swum the strait. The only man to swim it was John van Leeuwen on February 7, 1963.
