Carrier breaks record
The General Aquinaldo, the bulk carrier loading coal at Lyttelton, is a record-breaking vessel.
She has called at port twice, and both visits have resulted in a new record being set. The 29,759-tonne General Aquinaldo seems to specialise in being the vessel to carry the largest export shipment from port. She arrived at port yesterday and is expected to uplift 48,000 tonnes of coking coal for Japan. This will break the record she set in March, 1983, when she sailed from Lyttelton with 44,000 tonnes of export coal. Until now, this was the largest export shipment to have left port. Loading began on the vessel, which is berthed at Cashin Quay No. 1, about midday yesterday. The coal is expected to be aboard her by late Thursday evening, and she is due to sail from Japan on Friday. This export shipment will make a large hole in the Lyttelton coal stockpile, which now holds about 71,000 tonnes. More coal from mines at Reefton and Stockton will arrive at port by rail after the General Aquinaldo has sailed. Another bulk- carrier, the Ciansmore, is due at port early next month to uplift more export coal. ARRIVALS General Aquinaldo (8 a.m.), 29,759, Bluff (Scales).
