Rugby Union decision

Sir,—The pleasure expressed by HART at the decision of the Canterbury Rugby Union not to accept an invitation to tour South Africa, leaves a major question to be answered. Why has there been a stony silence from HART since last week’s announcement that New Zealand will have to play Israel in the next World Cup soccer elimination matches in the Oceania zone? f. Unless it is to be branded as

hypocritical, the logical step by HART is surely to announce a campaign to halt these matches against an Israeli team whose Government practices apartheid, pure and simple. The employment of territories for Palestinians (intersected by land for Jews only), the conquest and annexation of new territory, the forcible deportation of Palestinian mayors and countless other laws of inequality in Israel, make the South African system seem almost benevolent.— Yours, etc., G. C. DOAK. December 13, 1983.
