Cost of park
Sir, — It was reported (“The Press,” November 30) that the Christchurch City Council proposed spending $100,486 on a 341 sq m reserve opposite the civic offices. A later report (December 13) said that the reserve will be named Peter Scoular Park after the council’s long-serving deputy general manager and city engineer who retired in 1982. The existing “pocket park” area across from the civic offices was developed during Mr Secular’s employment with the council. It seems no great tribute to Mr Scoular to rip up a project completed under his management and do it over again at great public expense. Was the original work a mistake? They should call the new park “Twee Park” as a tribute to those who came up with this tiny but costly scheme to titivate their immediate view. The $lOO,OOO would be better spent elsewhere. — Yours, etc., THOMAS WILDER. December 14, 1983.
