NZPA-AAP Brisbane Brisbane’s 1984 winter racing carnival promises to be bigger and better than ever with Tuesday's announcement that the carnival will kick off with two $lOO,OOO races at Doomben. The chairman of the Brisbane Amateur Turf CLub. Judge Edmund Broad, said it would be the first time in the history of the popular winter fixture that the carnival had started with such rich races. Next year's winter carnival will begin with the $lOO,OOO Bernard Power Stakes (1615 m for three-year-olds on May 5 and end with the $lOO,OOO Channel 7 Classic (2020 m for the same
age group three weeks later. Both races have had massive stake increases in the last two years. "The Bernard Power was only worth $6OOO two years ago' and the Channel 7 Classic replaces the old Clive Uhr Quality which was worth $lO,OOO in 1981.” the B.A.T.C.'s chief executive, Mr Mike Wolsey, said. "Next year's winter carnival promises to be the best yet and our club’s programming is such that our top three-year-old races tie in with the distance events for the same age group at Eagle Farm, the Grand Prix Stakes and the Queensland Derby, in June.
