Mirage star at Tokyo show

Mitsubishi’s star turn at the Tokyo Motor Show was its new Mirage, which went on sale in Japan the day before the show opened. The Mirage has been restyled completely and has been given a European look. The new version is offered with 1.3, 1.5 and turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine, as well as a 1.8-litre diesel engine. Transmissions include 3-speed automatic, 4 x 2-speed Super Shift and, for the first time in a Mirage, a 5-speed manual gearbox. Suspension is by struts at the front and by a U-shaped beam (as in the Tredia and Cordia) at the rear. Toyota revealed its new front-wheel-drive version of the Corona, and Nissan

showed its front-wheel-drive Bluebird, both cars being rather better looking than their predecessors. Subaru sprang a surprise with its all-new J-10, a litre car which, with four-wheel-drive, could be classified as a supermini model. Like Subaru, Daihatsu is now putting four-wheel-drive into its microcar range.
