Unique meeting
NZPA-Reuter Kathmandu A Japanese climber and his wife, each leading parties from opposite sides of Mount Everest, are heading for a unique meeting atop the world’s highest mountain later this month.
Kazuyuki Takahashi, aged 40, is leading eight Japanese alpinists scaling Everest up the south-east ridge of the Nepalese side, while his wife, Michiko, aged 41, is
leading another, party up the northern face of the. Tibetan side.
Mr Takahashi’s party is using the standard climbing route pioneered 30 years ago by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, the first climbers to conquer Everest. The 29,028 feet peak has already been successfully scaled by 142 men and women, including 13 Japan; ese.
