Victoria strike ends
NZPA-AAP
Melbourne
Rail transport of Victoria’s record wheat harvest resumed yesterday after a rail strike ended. A V-Line official said that it was hoped to clear the wheat and - other freight backlog built up during the four-day strike within a couple of days.
Melbourne’s suburban train services were back to normal after the 14,000
striking railway workers throughout Victoria decided at mass meetings on Thursday to return to work at midnight yesterday. The state’s Transport Minister, Mr Steve Crabb, has agreed to a review of the State Transport Authority’s plans to close the 24 country rail freight centres.
The planned closings sparked the strike from
midnight last Sunday. A working party representing the Government and the rail union will meet next week to start a region-by-region review of the centres threatened by closing which will be completed by the end of March.
Mr Crabb said that the review could lead to some of the threatened depots being saved.
