Wairewa’s tussle for chairman over
The tussle for leadership of the Wairewa County Council ended yesterday when the former chairman, Cr W. J. Thompson, was reelected unopposed. Cr D. N. Cadman, who had earlier said that he would seek nomination, offered himself as an alternative candidate but could not find a seconder. It was the second time the new council had met but at its last meeting it had decided not to elect a chairman until an extraordinary vacancy in the Kinloch riding had been filled. A Puraki Bay farmer, Mr W. S. Hall, was nominated last month with 21 days given for the lodging of. objections. None was received and he was appointed yesterday. Kinloch bridge The meeting was shown plans drawn up by Royds, Sutherland and McLeay, Ltd, for the new Kinloch bridge which will be skewed
and built alongside the existing structure. Cr Cadman asked what the timetable for the project would be. Mr Thompson said that he hoped that tenders would be called in January and accepted by February, that work would begin in March, and that it
would be completed by midMay. Little River Hall With the Little River Community Hall due to be opened on January 28, the council discussed the formation of the management committee to approve bookings and set hire charges. It decided representation should be divided equally between itself and the local fire brigade; that they should have three members each, and that Kinloch, Kaituna, and Little River ridings should be represented. A letter will be sent to the fire brigade for confirmation of the plans. Fire restrictions Fire restrictions will be imposed in Wairewa County on December 16 and lifted at the end of April. Usually the ban begins on the last Saturday before Christmas but the date has been set forward this year because the grass in the county is high.
