Four boys save man in river

Four teen-age boys saved a • man from "probable drowning” in the Kaiapoi River on Thursday evening, the Kaiapoi police said yesterday. The man was rescued after he had fallen about 5m from a swing bridge, near the Mandeville Hotel, into the river. He had drifted about 50m when the boys heard his spluttering, said Constable Peter Gilligan. They stripped to their underpants, swam to the struggling man, and hauled him to the bank.'He was dazed after the mishap and

a friend arrived to take him home to recover.

“He would have gone under and probably drowned if it had not been for the boys’ quick action,” Constable Gilligan said. The incident happened about 10.30 p.m. when the tide was in and the river was 4m deep. The boys had been watching a Ministry of Transport checkpoint nearby. Constable Gilligan said the rescuers were Jeremy Hopkinson, Raymond Nuku Nuku, Mark Hibberd, and Marcus Pohio, ail of Kaiapoi.
