A new piece of surgical equipment, developed jointly by the German aerospace company, Dornier, and the University of Munich, has made it unnecessary, in two out of three cases, to have an operation for the removal of kidney stones. The machine locates the stones by X-ray, then shatters them with shock waves. About 1000 patients have so far had kidney and gall stones painlessly removed in this manner.
