Former league man to preach

PA Auckland A former rugby league international, Roy Christian, has been licensed as a Presbyterian minister and given authority to preach. Mr Christian, the New Zealand wing or centre from 1965 to 1972, attended St Andrew’s Church, Otahuhu, with representatives of 50 Auckland parishes. The quietly spoken Mr Christian, who is 40, and did not pass School Certificate at school, studied for four years at Knox College, Dunedin. He will join a parish in Mangere early next year where he will be ordained. Fletcher Roy Christian (his full name) is a direct descendent of Fletcher Christian, the famous mutineer of H.M.S. Bounty. “He was my sixth-great-grandfather,” said Mr Christian. The south Auckland area, where Mr Christian first made his mark, is where he is likely to stay. His four years away at Knox College in Dunedin meant four years without news of rugby league. Mr Christian, who in his rugby league career played for the Otahuhu Club, was New Zealand captain for three seasons.
