Talon at war

Talon. By Antony Melville-Ross. Collins, 1983. 317 pp. $22.95.

The adventures of H.M.S. Talon during the Second World War as told in this novel bear the stamp of authenticity. The author served in the Royal Navy and so can write of war-time life in a submarine with the authority which stems from first-hand knowledge. He also knows how to build up and sustain excitement and tension, which all makes for compelling reading. Some of the characters in an earlier novel reappear in "Talon,” and those readers who know them from that book will be glad to renew the acquaintanceship; those of us meeting them for the first time will find then} a very engaging crew. Their wives and girl friends are not drawn with such a sure hand, but they are an interesting if slightly implausible lot. Anyone who is tired of tensions and problems will find several engrossing hours of absolute escape while reading Talon. — Ted Glasgow.
