College crop walk
The Lincoln College cropping farm will open its gates to the public for inspection next Tuesday, December 13. The field day will follow a similar format to the one held in 1982. Visitors will be invited to walk around the property stopping at points of interest for discussion. This year speakers from the farm and college will be joined by representatives from D.5.1.R., Ministry of
Agriculture and Fisheries and commercial firms. The field day will start at 1 p.m. with an address from the college principal, Professor Sir James Stewart. This will take place off Calder drive on the college campus. From here visitors will be led around the farm in two groups. As well as a comprehensive look at the financial results for last year, visitors will see and hear about the management and prospects for a number of crops.
These will include Chinese cabbage for seed; direct drilled barley; wheat (direct drilled versus conventional); Barry amenity ryegrass; Bounty wheat; white clover for seed (with emphasis on control of insect pests); and Ellett ryegrass. The college has three contracts for the sale of barley and the relative merits of each will be outlined. The farm walk is expected to conclude at Calder drive at 4 p.m. Afternoon tea will be available.
