Hard work pays

This Cashmere High School leaver’s hard work on a Girls’ Brigade project has paid her in a way she did not expect. Jennifer Hill (above), of Spreydon, did a four-month study on Argyle Fabrics, part of the Lane Walker Rudkin group, earlier this year. It earned her an “excellent” grade for her Queen’s Badge, and when she took it to Argyle to

show the firm, the management was so impressed it offered her a job. “I am really pleased about it — it was quite a surprise to hear there was even something available,” she said. Miss Hill, who is 18, said she was the first female trainee Argyle had taken on, and one of two hired this year. She will start next month, and will be trained in a

wide variety of Argyle’s work. She was relieved to get the job, as she had applied for a number of others, and said that “only a handful” of Cashmere’s 200 school-leavers this year had found jobs so far. The project involved a lot of hard work, although there were a “good few hours of Mum’s help,” said Miss Hill’s mother, Mrs Muriel Hill.
