General forecast: In the North Island, warm northerlies with rain in, or spreading to, most areas. In the South Island, rain in western and southern areas and in the Alps, but clearing in Fiordland and easing to scattered showers in Southland and Otago. In Canterbury, cool south-westerlies becoming general, with some rain. On Saturday, showery weather likely in many areas. District forecasts: Canterbury: Rather cold south-westerlies becoming general; cloudy, with areas of rain.

Marlborough: Warm northerlies with periods of rain; cool south-westerlies likely, developing on the Kaikoura coast late in the day. Nelson, Buller: Periods of rain and winds becoming variable; mild. Westland: Northerlies and rain, the rain gradually easing in southern Westland.
