Mystery solved

A North Canterbury highcountry musterer is the mystery man seen carrying a body across a remote section of the Lewis Pass Road early on Wednesday morning.

The "body” was in fact the man’s female companion whom he carried back to his utility vehicle after she had been travel-sick, said Constable Peter Gilfedder, of Hanmer Springs. The police mounted a big search in the area, about Bkm from the Hanmer Springs junction, after a delivery van driver had reported seeing what appeared to be a half-naked man carrying a body across the road.

However, by Wednesday evening the police felt the mystery man had been up to nothing sinister.

The musterer, whose identity will not be released, got in touch with Constable Gilfedder yesterday morning to explain the circumstances which led to the driver’s sighting of him and his companion. The police are satisfied with the explanation. The musterer had apparently carried his companion over his shoulders “like a sack of wheat” Constable Gilfedder said.
