Stead will be missed twice

The Canterbury cricket team wil be without one of its best performers for two games this season. The Riccarton leg-spinner and batsman, David Stead, said yesterday that he would not be available for Canterbury's away matches against Otago, starting on January 17, and Central Districts on January 26. Stead, aged 36, had given business reasons as the background for his partial withdrawal. He has also relinquished the captaincy of the Riccarton senior team, although he will con-

tinue to play competition matches. Peter Stubbings is the new captain. Stead has been a superb performer for Canterbury in recent years. He has scored nearly 3000 runs in first-class cricket, including an innings of 193 against Centra] Districts, and taken 153 wickets, with best figures of seven for 99 in an innings. There is no immediate danger of Stead’s first-class career ending. “We will look at next season when it comes,” he said.
